The STEP Asia Conference 2025, themed “Thriving through Uncertainty: Wealth Planning for the Future“, was held last week at the Grand Hyatt, Hong Kong. The event brought together delegates from across the globe to explore the latest developments in wealth planning, trust and estate matters, and private client advisory in Asia.
Kerby Lau of Des Voeux Chambers spoke as a panelist in the session titled “Bless You“, alongside Nancy Chien TEP of Bedell Cristin. The discussion was moderated by Richard Wilson KC TEP of Serle Court Chambers.
The panel examined the growing trend of trustees and other power holders seeking the courts’ approval to bless what are described as “momentous decisions”. Speakers explored the circumstances that give rise to such applications, including when and why trustees may seek judicial blessing. Drawing on their extensive practical experience and legal expertise, they provided a comparative analysis of case law across multiple jurisdictions, highlighting the varied approaches courts have taken in addressing these applications.
