On 5 September, members (and former member, Deputy High Court Judge Gary Lam) of Des Voeux Chambers attended the Cerebrating the 25th anniversary of the celebration cocktail-cum-dinner organised by the Hong Kong Bar Association.
As explained in the Bar’s announcement:-
“The scholarship aims to enhance the advocacy skills of our young barristers, so as to best assist the courts in a fair and effective manner which is most conducive to the proper administration of justice,” said Mr. Jose Maurellet SC, Chairman of the HKBA. “Over the past quarter-century, the scholarship is an important testimony of the HKBA’s contribution in nurturing local legal talents, some of whom have become judge or senior counsel. It embodies Charles Ching’s dedication in upholding the rule of law.”
The star-studded night was graced with the Honourable Chief Justice Mr. Andrew Cheung, the Honourable former Chief Justice Mr. Geoffrey Ma, former judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court, Mr. Mohan Bharwaney SC, Secretary for Justice Mr. Paul Lam SC, Deputy Secretary for Justice Dr. Horace Cheung, Her Honour Judge Adriana Tse Ching, and President of The Law Society of Hong Kong Mr. Roden Tong, amongst others.
Mr. Charles Ching was one of the first permanent judges of the Court of Final Appeal when it was established in 1997, making significant contributions to the development of Hong Kong’s legal system. He continued to serve as a non-permanent judge after his retirement in 2000 and was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal that same year in recognition of his dedicated service to the Hong Kong Judiciary.
In memory of Mr. Charles Ching, the HKBA has set up the Charles Ching Memorial Scholarship. As of 2025, 92 scholars have been awarded the scholarship. Every scholar will be granted an amount ranging from HK$10,000 to HK$75,000 for completing an overseas advocacy training programme. HK$3.5 million have been distributed to scholars who have completed the training up to August 2025.
