Winnie Tam SC Invited to Moderate a Panel on Hong Kong Legal Week 2023

14 Nov 2023

At the Hong Kong Legal Week 2023 organised by the Department of Justice last week (6-10 Nov), Winnie Tam SC was invited to moderate a panel on “Rule of Law: A Core Pillar of Support for the “8 Centres” under the National 14th Five-Year Plan – The Art of Law where East meets West in Hong Kong” on Day 5.

It is a global trend for artworks to become commercialized and digitalized, and law and art are inextricably linked. An environment encouraging creativity and cross-sectoral collaboration, as well as protecting intellectual property rights, is essential to developing Hong Kong into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange.

In her speech, Winnie emphasized Hong Kong’s increasing involvement in culture and the arts after the opening of the West Kowloon Cultural District and the National Palace Museum. As arts activities become more commercialized, Hong Kong needs a legal system to protect creators, such as composers, actors, and singers, as well as investors and businessmen. She believes that now is the right time to discuss how the rule of law can support Hong Kong to become a capital of arts and culture.

Mr Warren Cheng, Director, Fine Art Asia Executive Committee & Arts Consultant, Ink Asia, Prof Steven Gallagher, Associate Dean (Academic and Student Affairs), Faculty of Law, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof Kenny WONG, Chairman of the IP Committee of The Law Society of Hong Kong and Ms Monin Ung, Managing Partner, Mung Legal joined as panel speakers.
