On 1 April 2026, Des Voeux Chambers was honoured to host Dr Jordan English of the University of Oxford as the Oxford–HKU Visiting Fellow for a public lecture at the DVC Conference Centre. This event formed part of the DVC Legal Series and featured contributions from DVC members Jenkin Suen SC and Duncan McCombe, with Tom Ng as the moderator, under the theme “Remedies in the Supreme Court – Part I”.
The lecture provided an in‑depth examination of recent UK Supreme Court decisions on equitable remedies and fiduciary duties, focusing on landmark cases such as Recovery Partners GP Ltd v Rukhadze [2025] UKSC 10 and Mitchell v Al Jaber [2025] UKSC 43. The speakers explored important issues such as the nature of fiduciary duties, equitable compensation, causation and counterfactual analysis, and the assessment of loss in breach of fiduciary duty cases. The discussion also highlighted the ongoing judicial debate on whether certain remedies enforce primary duties or operate as responses to wrongdoing, and the practical implications of these distinctions for legal practice.
The seminar drew a full house, with attendees ranging from HKU Law Faculty professors to distinguished practitioners. The lively exchanges reflected strong interest in the latest jurisprudential developments.
Looking ahead, Remedies in the Supreme Court – Part II will take place on 16 April 2026, addressing recent UK Supreme Court decisions on third‑party liability and equitable remedies. We look forward to another stimulating session of debate and insight in the next session.
